The most common causes of toothache are an infection in the gums or a severe amount of tooth decay.

If a blow to the face caused the pain and you are experiencing swelling, a cold compress held lightly to the side of your face might provide some relief. To make a cold compress simply place ice in a zip-top bag wrapped in a washcloth or tea towel.

A topical oral anesthetic, lightly massaged onto the surrounding gums might also help ease the pain in the short term. You can rinse the area with lukewarm salt water to wash away any blood or debris.
